My Kind of Rick Rant

Filed under: Antistupidity,Canada,Celebrities,China,Good Stuff,Media,Rants,Rights,Video — Dennis @ 12:35 am

They can fly???Crack a cold one, throw Flight of the Valkyries on the turntable and enjoy the spectacle of all the soaring swine. That’s right boys and girls, Rick Mercer said something with which I am in total agreement. He actually manages to take all the criticism of Harper’s stance with China and, in what I must admit is a very Canadian fashion, put it in just the right light.

No, I haven’t been drinking. Well, not that much anyway. Here, see for yourself and see what you think.

Something In the Water, Maybe?

Thumbs up!Damn. First Bruce Cockburn grows a brain, and now this. And here I thought all the fancypants types in the entertainment industry were supposed to be all anti-military up the wazoo.

That doesn’t seem to be the case here, though. Canadian-born Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels seems to be the latest in a lengthening line of the supposedly exclusively-left showbiz crowd to yank his cranium out of his colon and say what most of us have known all along:

OTTAWA (CP) – “Saturday Night Live” creator Lorne Michaels applauded Canada’s participation in the Afghan mission Thursday, saying he’s glad his native country is “back in the world.”

But the Toronto-born Michaels, one of six Canadians being honoured this week with a Governor General’s Performing Arts Award for lifetime achievement, had some sharp criticism for the previous Liberal government’s reaction to the September 11 attacks.

It’s almost enough to make you want to have faith in celebrities again.

Don’t Like Me? So What?

VideosThis is good. I mean, really good. Hat’s off to Dave (again) for dropping this in my email box. I have to admit, I havent heard about “diggers” since the war stories that my uncles told me as a kid, and I’d never heard of Beccy Cole at all. For those of you as ignorant as I was, Beccy Cole is an Australian lass with quite the set of pipes (knock it off; I said pipes) who has been getting a lot of crap lately for her support of the Aussie troops in the war on terror.

Well, Beccy doesn’t seem to be the kind of girl who just sits back and takes guff like that. Although she doesn’t exactly put it the way I would (i.e.: Bleep off), she manages to get her point across pretty darned well. So turn up yer speakers, ladies and gents, and enjoy…

(Oh, yeah…  The song’s called “Poster Girl” and, gee whiz will ya look at that, it’s made the top of the CMR charts)

Watch Your Heads

They can fly???Holy crap! Mind your melons, boys and girls, those pigs are flying and they’re flying low. Damnedest thing I’ve ever seen. Well, second damnedest, actually. It seems that somewhere here in nice, politically correct, lefty-loving Canada, there’s actually a celebrity with his head screwed on straight who isn’t named Stompin’ Tom. I woke up this morning and found this in my email. It seems that, unlike a lot of other celebrities, Bruce “if I had a rocket launcher, some sonofabitch would die” Cockburn isn’t falling for the peacenik propaganda from the Taliban Jack! crowd…

BELLEVILLE, Ont. (CP) — Trying to imagine Bruce Cockburn as a soldier is a bit of a stretch.

But the singer, whose songs strongly condemn war and injustice, says enlisting in the military is something he could consider.

“What would I do if the Taliban invaded Canada?” he said in an interview, staring reflectively at the ceiling of his dressing room before performing at Belleville’s Empire Theatre.

“I’d sign up. I know how to shoot,” Cockburn said with an easy shrug.

Tough words for an avowed peace-loving folkie.

The rest of the article is just as good. I have to say, it’s damned nice to see someone in the public eye without their head up their arse.

Give it a rest already

Mainstream MediaMel Gibson. Mel Gibson. Mel Gibson Mel Gibson Mel Gibson Mel Gibson Mel Gibson Mel Gibson Mel Gibson Mel Gibson Mel Gibson.

Give it a goddamn rest, already.

Okay, buddy; I heard you the forty-eighth time, no need to go over it all again. What the hell’s all the fuss about, anyway? Yes, he made an ass of himself, but nowhere near anything that would justify the perfect shitstorm we’ve been forced to ride out over a drunken rant. You want a headline? Here’s your headline:

DRUNK MAN SAYS STUPID THING

AsshatteryHoly shit. Stop the presses. Yes, he said something nasty about Jews. So did Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson, remember? But that blew over pretty quick. Just about everyone on the planet has said something crappy about someone else at one point in time or another but somehow the world seems to just keep on spinning along llike nothing happened. It seems at times that the only groups in the world that it’s safe to slag these days are white people and Christians. But that’s another rant altogether.

So Mel got tanked and barfed up a PR hairball. Get on with your lives already. There are a lot of worse things going on that could use all the attention this is eating up.
